What to bring to your law school exam

Here is my checklist. Laptop is obvious but I include for the obsessive people.

  • Pencils
  • Mechanical eraser
  • Small pencil sharpener
  • Ear plugs
  • Laptop
  • Network cable for laptop
  • Pens
  • One or two highlighters
  • Water
  • Blue books (optional)

I prefer mechanical erasers (the white erasers that are the size and shape of a pencil) because they are much better than the erasers on the back of your pencil – those dry out and are terrible.

You only need one or two different color highlighters. You won’t have time to get excessive with multiple colors.

In terms of bringing a laptop or blue books, it is up to you. I type faster than I handwrite so I use a laptop. Time yourself and determine which is best. Also, if your BAR exam is handwritten, you might want to get into the practice of handwriting it. If you handwrite, check with your law school to see if you need to bring blue books or not.

The network cable is optional if your law school has wireless. You might want to bring it just in case there is some wireless glitch. Expect Murphy to have his due.

You can get cheap earplugs at any drug store. Look for ones that have a high decibel blocking range.
